"You’ve probably heard that one before. It’s not new and it never gets old and it’s a folk song."

I painted these back in 2008 as a side project to honor the comics I grew up with. Looking at them today I realized Jack Kirby created half the characters in these images. And many, many more: Galactus, the Stranger, the Inhumans, the Sandman for DC, just to name a few. As I get older, I find myself looking at his work more and more. That crazy cosmic aesthetic and his creative collaborative vision helped invent a new more relevant set of American folk tales and mythology that incorporate a whole universe of beings, all of whom struggle with very human problems. In my opinion Jack Kirby belongs with Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollack in the pantheon of 20th century artists, and his work may very well outlive theirs.

So happy 97th birthday, Jack Kirby! King of Comics!
